With our ability to machine plastics to close tolerances, Tychon, Inc. was approached to supply the PC board case shown here. We machined this electronic enclosure from solid ABS – a tough, rigid thermoplastic with high impact strength and good electrical insulating properties. Although this type of product is typically molded, the customer chose our machined option due to small-order quantities that did not justify the cost of production tooling. Our precision CNC machine shop is set up to efficiently manufacture parts in both low and high volumes, which made machining these ABS cases very affordable for them.
Production of this PCB enclosure involved vertical milling. Initial test runs uncovered several issues, so we worked with their engineering team to get them resolved before initiating production-level processing. ABS plastic is typically easy to machine, but we had to pay close attention to aspects such as clamping, spindle speed, feed rates, and tool choices to ensure all chips were effectively cleared from the cutting zone and there was no bowing or warping of the workpiece.
When completed, the PC board case measured 1.00″ in length x 30.0″ in width x 3.00″ in height. By emphasizing machining accuracy, we upheld tolerances of ±.005″. Quality assurance consisted of taking caliper measurements to verify dimensional accuracy and gauging to ensure the thread pitch conformed to the company’s specifications. We shipped the first order of 100 units within the specified timeframe of 4-5 weeks, and we fulfill reorders on a continuing basis – proving the customer’s satisfaction with our PC board cases services in Florida!
